What Are Google AI Overviews and Why Does Reddit Dominate Them?

Reddit appears in roughly 21% of all Google AI Overviews — more than any other domain. Here's why that happens, and what it means for your brand's visibility in AI-generated search results.

Search for almost any product recommendation, comparison, or “best of” query in Google right now. Before the organic results, you’ll likely see a block of AI-generated text at the top of the page. And buried inside that block, there’s a good chance you’ll find a Reddit link.

This is Google AI Overviews — formerly called Search Generative Experience (SGE). And Reddit’s dominance within it is not an accident.

What Google AI Overviews Actually Are

AI Overviews launched publicly in May 2024 after more than a year of beta testing under the SGE label. They appear at the top of Google search results for a wide range of queries — particularly informational searches, how-to questions, comparisons, and product recommendations.

Instead of showing you ten blue links and letting you decide, AI Overviews synthesise an answer from across the web and present it directly. The sources cited underneath the answer box are the pages Google retrieved and used to construct the response.

This is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) in action. Google’s AI doesn’t generate the answer from memory alone — it actively searches the live index, pulls relevant documents into the model’s context, and constructs a synthesis. The cited URLs are the actual sources it used.

Which means: if your brand appears in the sources, your brand’s narrative shapes the answer. If it doesn’t appear, you’re invisible — even if you rank well in the traditional results below.

Why Reddit Appears in ~21% of AI Overviews

Studies of AI Overview citation patterns since the May 2024 launch have consistently found Reddit cited in approximately 20–21% of all AI Overviews — more than any other single domain, including Wikipedia, major news publishers, and brand-owned websites.

The reason comes down to how Google’s retrieval system evaluates source quality. When selecting which pages to pull for an AI Overview, Google’s systems look for:

1. Community trust signals

Reddit’s upvote and award system creates a natural quality filter that’s hard to game. A comment with 2,000 upvotes on a product recommendation thread has demonstrated social proof at scale — something a brand’s own product page structurally cannot show.

2. Conversational specificity

AI Overviews are optimised to answer real questions from real people. Reddit threads are literal examples of real people asking and answering real questions. The format matches the intent perfectly.

3. Account karma and engagement depth

Reddit accounts with established karma history, long comment threads with multiple contributors, and posts with substantive back-and-forth discussion all signal legitimacy to Google’s systems. These are the threads that get selected as AI Overview sources.

4. Freshness combined with permanence

Reddit threads remain indexed indefinitely while continuing to accumulate engagement. A thread from 2022 that’s still getting upvoted in 2026 signals sustained relevance — exactly what Google wants to surface in an AI Overview.

5. Topic breadth across every niche

Reddit has subreddits covering every conceivable product category. Whatever query Google is trying to answer, there’s almost certainly a Reddit thread that addresses it directly — often more specifically than any brand-owned content.

What This Means for Brand Content vs. Community Content

Here’s the uncomfortable truth for most brands: your website is a worse AI Overview source than a Reddit thread about your product category.

Google’s AI systems are calibrated to trust peer-generated community content over brand-owned content for recommendation queries. The logic is sound — a brand saying “our product is the best” is not a credible source for an objective answer. A community of users who have no financial incentive to recommend a specific product is.

This creates a structural advantage for brands with authentic Reddit presence — and a structural liability for brands that rely entirely on their own website, PR coverage, or paid review platforms.

A single well-upvoted Reddit thread recommending your product in a specific use case can deliver more AI Overview citations than your entire website.

The Karma and Engagement Signals That Determine Citation Selection

Not all Reddit content gets cited equally. The threads and comments most likely to appear in AI Overviews share a pattern:

  • Posted by accounts with established karma — typically 1,000+ karma, posting history across multiple subreddits
  • Located in subreddits with genuine community engagement — not promotional subreddits, but active communities where your product category is discussed naturally
  • Structured as a genuine answer — the comment or post directly and specifically addresses a question, rather than promoting a product
  • Has upvote depth — even 50–100 upvotes signals quality to Google’s systems
  • Contains discussion — multiple replies, follow-up questions, and community interaction all strengthen the thread’s authority signals

The implication for brands: getting mentioned in the right Reddit thread, by the right account, in the right way, is worth more for AI visibility than almost any other content investment.

How to Optimise for AI Overview Inclusion

You can’t submit URLs to Google’s AI Overview system or pay to appear in them. But you can structure your Reddit presence to maximise the probability of being cited.

Map the queries you want to own. What product questions do your customers ask before buying? What comparisons matter in your category? What “best for X use case” queries exist? These are the AI Overview triggers you want to appear in.

Find the Reddit threads that already rank for those queries. Search Google for each query. If a Reddit thread appears on page one of organic results, it’s a candidate for AI Overview inclusion. Understand what those threads say — and whether your brand is mentioned positively, negatively, or not at all.

Participate authentically in the threads that matter. Adding genuine, substantive value to existing threads builds both the thread’s authority and your brand’s presence within it.

Seed new threads for queries with no current coverage. If a search query returns no Reddit results, there’s an opening. A well-constructed thread seeded in the right subreddit can rank within weeks and begin generating AI Overview citations.

The Compound Effect: Google Rankings + AI Citations

Threads that get cited in AI Overviews don’t stop there. The same properties that make a Reddit thread a good AI Overview source — authority, engagement, permanence — also make it rank well in Google’s traditional organic results.

You get both: a citation in the AI-generated answer at the top, and an organic ranking in the results below. Two placements from one piece of community content.

There’s a third layer specific to ChatGPT. An April 2026 Ahrefs analysis of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts found that URLs entering ChatGPT through its standard web search channel are cited at an 88.46% rate. Reddit threads that rank in Google’s organic results enter through that channel — meaning the same thread appearing in a Google AI Overview is also shaping ChatGPT’s answers through its highest-citation retrieval path. (This is distinct from the dedicated Reddit API feed, which ChatGPT uses for background context but cites at only 1.93%.)

And because Reddit threads don’t decay the way social media does, that compound effect keeps building over time. A thread seeded today can still be generating AI citations and organic traffic three years from now.

The Practical Takeaway

AI Overviews are now part of how your customers discover and evaluate brands. Reddit is the single most-cited source within that system.

Understanding how AI tools learn what to say about your brand is the first step. Building the Reddit presence that shapes those AI answers is the next one.
